CANALE Q&A - VOLUME 2

© Copyright 2003, Stephen M. Canale & IRED.com, Inc.

Do search engines regard hyphenated domain names as one or more words? Take a specific example. Say I was a realtor in Chicago and I wanted the most appropriate domain name. Let's also assume that www.chicagorealestate.com and www.chicago-real-estate.com were both available. The question is, "which of these would be the best choice?"

It's important to keep in mind that each search engine can have its own unique way of locating and organizing information. What may help raise your ranking with one may actually lower it with another.

However, if both versions were available, the most prudent suggestion is to secure both and simply have them point (direct traffic) to the same web site. With the low cost of registering domain names, the few added dollars would be money very well spent.

It's also important to recognize that most search engines rely more on content than domain names.

Ebay, Yahoo, Amazon, Expedia, PriceGrabber, ZDNet (among countless others) didn't mean anything to anyone prior to offering great content!

Any suggestions on a portable printer? The new HP 450 sounds interesting with its 1200x1200 dpi resolution...or do you prefer the traditional Canon BJC, or another contender?

If you want to both print and scan, then the Cannon cannot be beat, and for one simple reason. Cannon makes a scanner cartridge that can be "snapped" into the ink jet carrier instantly turning the printer into a scanner.

While there are other portable printers that I like, the Cannon is the only one that I know of that offers this truly outstanding option, without being excessively large.

The last time I looked, these special scanner cartridges cost roughly $90.

How can I set my name, address, phone, etc. to be fixed to all my emails rather than re-tying the information each time?

Almost all email software will allow you to save this information in what is universally called a "signature" file.

Search the Help menu of your email software for the word "signature" and you'll no doubt find that this is easily accomplished with the program you use.

Some programs, such as Eudora will even allow for multiple signature files. This feature enables you to use a different outgoing message that's appropriate to the email. A special signature can then be used for personal email, another for your buyers, one for sellers and any other variation that you might like.

Would you please advise me to the easiest way to reduce the size of a photo so that I can post it on the internet.

If you're using Windows XP, then you can download a free "resizing" utility from Microsoft at: http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe

As this utility adds the "Resize image" option to the menu that drops down when you "right-click" any graphic file, there's really nothing easier.

Otherwise, you can use just about any software you like, including Windows Paint, if you like.

As for the best size, smaller is simply better when it comes to email and Web pages as larger sizes and higher resolutions are primarily only useful for printing.
