COACHING THE BEST!

WHERE DO COACHES COME FROM?

Let's face it, most of us are familiar with the term personal coaching. It is becoming in-style, fashionable or just plain inVogue to have a personal coach. However, personal coaching is not just a trendy term. Real people are taking real businesses to the next level with personal one-on-one coaching. There are several key components to what makes coaching so valuable. I believe that the coach must have a love and a passion for the area in which they are coaching. With regards to Real Estate Coaching, that love was developed by having a successful real estate career, by making lots of mistakes and enjoying many victories over the years of practice. It means we have run into the brick walls, and figured out what it took to get over, around, or through them. We may have achieved great success in one area of our business, only to find another area of our life needed immediate attention. We learned how valuable balance was mainly after we lost it for a period of time. We know the potential for this business is unlimited and the opportunities are everywhere. As coaches go, we are not perfect. It does not mean we did everything right, it means we have passion for the business and compassion for those working it.

Coaches should have a competitive spirit, with the drive to develop the best out of each client. They do not have to have sold 50 million dollars worth of real estate in a year, stop a speeding bullet or jump the tallest building with a single bound. Look around the world of sports. Coaches are not always better than the clients they are coaching. However, they are most likely better at looking at the big picture and giving the valuable input needed to take that client to the next level, while holding the client accountable to his own dreams and desires. Ask yourself this question, "Who coaches Tiger Woods? Isn't he already the best? Could his coach beat Tiger in a round of golf?" I think we all know the answer to that. If he could he would! Yet Tiger listens to every word that coach utters and makes a decision to follow the advice or not.

Next time you turn on the television, tune into a NFL football game and scan the sidelines. Could those coaches or assistant coaches go out and play the game the way those they coach can? For a multitude of possible reasons, the answer is no. Some of the best coaches in history were once World Class athletes before they became coaches; Larry Bird, Pat Riley, and Vince Lombardi, just to name a few. What those coaches have, is insight into the game, the dynamics, and the ability to ask the "WHAT IF" questions and determine the outcome in advance. They have the ability to smell danger in advance and also know when victory is just around the corner. Are they always right? The answer is no, for even the best coaches. That is why they have what we call a win/loss column.

WHY HIRE A COACH!

I believe coaching is on the rise right now because we see that this may very well be the one thing that can propel our careers, build that body you always wanted, help you get down to that desired weight, or even help you extend the length and quality of your life.

Let's get real for a moment. Why do I need a coach? Lets look at the weight loss industry, in particular, Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers are both companies that focus on the volume and quality of food intake and the accountability that helps us stay on track. Do they have a magic pill or any kind of instant result? The answer is a resounding NO! If you were to ask the average overweight person if they knew what they needed to do, I would venture that ninety percent would say "yes". They know what needs to take place to reduce their weight. They need to decrease the number of fat grams and calories they take in each day, they need to move more frequently, and at a faster pace. In other words, they need to exercise and tone their bodies. So, if we know, why do we still struggle with weight issues and why are Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers such thriving businesses? Because, what most of us need in our lives is the accountability to take it to the next level.

WILL I HIRE A COACH?

Finally, before you hire a coach I believe you need to ask some questions of yourself and of your prospective coach:

  • Do I have the desire to take my business to the next level? That next level may be a substantial increase in volume, or control of the business you have presently, or possibly more time to enjoy the fruits of my labor. It may be to create an exit strategy to move from an active Realtor to a retired Realtor with some ongoing income from a business I sold, rather than walked away from. The next level can mean different things to different people, however you have to decide if you want to take it there.
  • Am I willing to allow my coach to hold me accountable and to what degree?
  • Is the coach or coaching company committed to one thing, helping me to achieve my goals? There are coaching companies out there that hire active realtors to coach their clients, and while that might seem at first glance a good move, my first question is, "Whose business would they be more focused on?" Which is more important, their real estate sales business or their coaching clients? I am sure these are good people with good intentions, but can a man really serve two masters?
  • Is this process truly a one-on-one coaching program?
  • Will I know who my coach is before I commit myself to a coaching contract?
  • Is my coach a full-time coach or a part-time coach, part-time realtor? And can a coach really do both well?
  • Has the coach I have chosen ever sold real estate? How good at it was he or she? I definitely believe the coach should have had a successful career behind them in order to teach you the ups and downs of the business.

These are just a few of the things I believe you need to think about before you decide to move forward in the process of changing your life. My encouragement to you is to make a decision, to live the most incredible life you can possibly imagine; it is yours for the taking.......
