IRED Top Ten Web Sites

IRED's Top 10 Hot Picks for March, 1997

In Alphabetical Order

American Individual Magazine and Coffeehouse Excellent
http://www.aimc.com/aimc/
It's a magazine. It's a directory. It's a chat line. Whatever it is to you, it is a great resource for consumers, entrepreneurs and anyone who telecommutes or operates a home office. Even if you don't fall into one of these categories (who doesn't?) it is a fun place to visit, a beautifully designed site and a gold mine of some of the most unusual quotations we have seen. E.g., "When you are skinning your customers you should leave some skin on to grow again so that you can skin them again." Nikita Khrushchev

California CoolSpots are missing. ResidentialExcellent
http://www.coolspots.com/spotindex.html
We have to confess: we are suckers for unusual properties, and leave it to California to have more than its share of eccentric realty. Tour the infamous "Bottle House;" visit Dinosaurs and Gold Mines, Ghost Towns or the Queen Mary. Each site is rated on a + to +++++ scale. Slide show presentations of most sites are extremely well done.

Douglas Gerlach's invest-o-rama!Excellent
http://www.investorama.com/
Invest-o-rama! the name sounds more like a circus sideshow than a serious personal investment site. While we cannot vouch for the quality of the investment advice, we can vouch for the quality of the site. Doug's humorous approach reminds us a bit of The Motley Fool from AOL, and that is no small feat. The Swami is a random link generator that takes you to investment sites. The Directory give you the reins to view the links you really need to find. If you're an investor you'll bookmark Invest-o-rama.

EquiSearch, Horse Real Estate.ResidentialExcellent
The second most frequent request we get at IRED for property information relates to "horse properties." At last a site that puts it all together. Farms and ranches all over the US and a few in Canada are displayed here with plenty of information about the properties. Horse lovers will also want to visit the parent page, Equisearch.com for other Equine info.

Mountain Lake Properties in ColoradoResidentialExcellent
Dreaming about Western Colorado? If so you'll appreciate the scenery, and also the tips. How to choose a site, coping with Rocky Mountain winters, employment opportunities and more...and did we mention the scenery? Take a photo tour of the Grand Lake region and wildlife and then see if you can resist the properties listed here.

OfficeFinder Home PageCommercialExcellent
http://www.officefinder.com/
Need office space? How much space? What is included? A great source of vital information for tenants. Office listings data is restricted to members, but there is plenty here for anyone interested in office leasing.

Sound Home Resource Web-Home PageExcellent
http://www.soundhome.com/
Whether you are buying, building, repairing or remodeling a home, you want to wind up with a Sound Home! Well organized and exceptionally informative, SoundHome is presented by Seattle, WA, Property Inspector George Guttmann. This is one of the treasures that reminds us anew of the edge Web access gives consumers and real estate professionals, and of the spirit of generosity of so many in the industry, which invariably rebounds doubly.

Taos, New Mexico, Lou MorganResidentialExcellent
http://www.laplaza.org/tp/lou/louhome.htm
Along with the history and market information Lou Morgan gives us a taste of the ambiance of Northern New Mexico.

US to UK Moving FAQExcellent
http://sparky.parmly.luc.edu/sandell/
Nothing fancy here at all...unless you are a US native who is about to take the plunge into ex-patriot life in the UK. Yes, it's a Frequently Asked Questions file, the ubiquitous FAQ, but what a FAQ! Get the straight dope on import taxes, diet, pets, power conversion, shopping, social attitudes, and recommended reading. The only way to repay the author would be for other ex-patriots to share their own cross-cultural experiences. We'd love to see a similar FAQ for moving from the UK to the US; the US to Japan; Japan to Germany, or Norway to Portugal!

BONUS: Web Tool of the Month

Recreational Software Advisory CouncilExcellent
http://www.rsac.org/
RSAC is a tool for self-control of the Web. If we don't want government censorship, (and who does?) then we should be using simple and useful methods such as RSAC to identify the type of content on our sites. We do not advocate censorship of any kind, but we understand and applaud parents and individuals rights to decide for themselves what they will view. Get your RSAC rating and add it to your web site. It's good for your business.
