Money's Best Places to Retire
Money Magazine has crunched the data and pitted some of America's favorite hometowns against each other to find 'the best places to retire'. Criteria included affordable living, good health care, good transportation and opportunities for outdoor recreation, continuing education, and cultural experiences.
Lifestyle quality measures will differ for retirees as they sort through their own preferences and make a decision about their new destination. The 'Find Your Best Place' calculator allows readers to search a database of nearly 500 cities that, based on the scoring of desirable features, narrows the possible retirement spots for you.
For some folks, staying put makes sense because of family and friends, but for hundreds of thousands 'active seniors'; a new destination is part of future plans. Here are the top choices, according to Money:
- Fort Collins, Colorado
- Bradenton, Florida
- Brunswick, Maine
- Asheville, North Carolina
- Bend, Oregon
Runners-up include:
- Santa Fe, New Mexico
- Hot Springs, Arkansas
- San Luis Obispo, California
- Madison, Wisconsin
- Amherst, Massachusetts
