Is your message getting across, the right way...?

Now that you have built your office in cyberspace, is your web site delivering the right message? Here we will try to explain the major point to having a successful web site:

  • Browser compatibility: A point that most people don't ever think about, is that there is more than one internet browser out there. Another point to take into consideration is that there are different versions of the same browser, Netscape6 versus Netscape 4.0. A browser is a translation device. It takes a document written in the HTML language and translates it into a formatted Web page. The result of this translation is a little like giving two human translators a sentence written in French and asking them to translate it into English. Both will get the meaning across, but may not use the same words to do so.
  • Font type: make sure you use a widely used font type, or font family type. Do not use some font that might look good on your computer but is not a basic font.
  • Screen sizes (resolutions): If you don't test your pages using different screen resolutions, your page may be stretched to fit a large screen, or may be cropped to fit a small screen. Many experienced Web designers use HTML tables to control their page layout, yet they design their pages on large, 1024x768 pixel screens. When these pages are displayed on smaller computer screens, the browser may not be able to fit all the content onto the screen. In these cases, the content will scroll off the right of the page. While this may not sound like much of a problem, users hate scrolling left and right to view a page.
  • Java scripts and other cutting edge technology: Make sure that when you use java scripts or other effects, they are at least compatible with both main stream browsers, Netscape & Internet Explorer, other wise the end result might be a magnificent site in one browser and a blank screen in another.
In conclusion, once your web site is up and running, the best advice I can give is: make sure you test at least 3 different computers, using a minimum of two major browsers, and testing your web site on an older version of Netscape & Internet Explorer. You can download older versions of these browsers at www.netscape.com and at www.microsoft.com
