The Leaning Tower of... Montreal

The Olympic stadium and the leaning tower - a cable mast today, an office building tomorrow. The Olympic stadium and the leaning tower -
a cable mast today, an office building tomorrow.

There are different kinds of office buildings - from concrete or glass-and-steel, small and tall, orange-blue and even pink, everything you can even imagine. But your imagination can't foresee what is to become the strangest office building in the world - the tallest leaning tower in Montreal hovering at an angle of 45-degree over the Olympic stadium in the city. The works of turning the 20-storey tower into 300,000 sq.feet office building began some weeks ago and the whole project is expected to be completed by 2003.

Originally the tower that was built in 1987 was designed simply to be a mast for the cables holding up the roof of the stadium. The idea now is to turn the tower into an office building with 2-storey observation desk at the top and ground-level sport center and pools. Observatory will provide an excellent 50-miles view and together with the sport facilities they will be opened to the general public and to the expected 1,500 people that will work at the leaning tower. Some of the sport facilities are really impressive - 250-meter-long pool, diving pool and children's pool. The sports center offers aqua-fitness, badminton, aerobic dances, fitness, bodybuilding, in other words almost everything that need office workers after a hard day upstairs.

The stadium and the tower are among Montreal's most popular attractions. They are also on the walking distance from the nearby Botanic Gardens, which are considered to be among the best in Canada and also from the local Insectarium and Biodome, other two Montreal landmarks.

The tower project is estimated to cost approximately $44.5 million* and it's a joint venture of the provincial government of Quebec, of Busac Real Estate Corp. (Montreal) and JEMB Realty Corp. of New York (USA). Both companies jointly own and manage about five million sq.feet of office and shopping center spaces in the United States and Canada.

The joint venture has already signed a 99-year lease with Quebec province authority that manages the Olympic facilities (RIO). The president of RIO Mr. Alain Riendeau estimates that within four years the office occupancy in the tower will add to RIO's income more than $1 million a year in additional revenue.
