Japan can also offer affordable life

© 2005, IRED.Com, Inc., Simeon Mitropolitski

Japan is a country that without any doubt is among the most expensive in the world. Even 15 years after its real estate market balloon began shrinking it's still a place to live that few will call affordable by any meaning. Yet despite its fame to be so expensive it may offer also some affordable alternatives for those who plan moving temporarily to its shores. But you have to be prepared to live outside big cities, far from your national communities and to be prepared to learn Japanese language as quickly as possible.

Japan by any standard is among the most expensive countries in the world. Even without mentioning the real estate, its food is also among the most expensive, being imported from around the world, and having an additional sales tax put on it. Usually that's the main reason why so many independent specialists even from the most developed countries eligible for working visas don't even try to look at the possibilities offered by this country. The prospect of paying thousands of dollars per month for studio is enough to cool the aspirations of more than one. Given that the country is in need of English teachers and IT specialists and that the first group has relatively low though stable incomes, it isn't surprising that so many positions remain vacant.

The reality isn't so bad and there are some opportunities to move to Japan without dedicating more than half of your monthly income paying the rent of 250 sq. feet studio. The real estate is still prohibitively expensive in the largest cities, but far from the busy urban centers it's just a fraction of it. Japan is a relatively small country given its large population. The interurban transportation system is second to none and shuttling between the cities and your affordable house won't take ages.

Another affordable opportunity is to decide to settle down around some smaller towns far from the largest expatriates communities. The need for English teachers isn't confined only to Tokyo and to other million-sized cities. The value of your monthly payment is higher and the main drawback is that there are not too many people speaking English around so learning Japanese becomes an urgent necessity. On the other hand, learning another language doesn't seem so bad idea after all. Think about the time back home after this overseas adventure. Your CV does look much better with "Japanese" among your spoken languages, doesn't it?
