London: 7/7 and two weeks later

© 2005, IRED.Com, Inc., Simeon Mitropolitski

The facts are known. Terrorists blew up four bombs in London on July 7, 2005 and tried to make a sequel two weeks later. Hundreds of articles tried to explain WHY this happened, WHY this has been made possible, WHY this wasn't prevented and WHY this might happen again. Since the names of the four perpetrators became public I couldn't be more amazed of how ordinary human beings they were. People we meet every day on our way to work and back home. Is it possible to save our lives against killers that defy any standard criminal profile? Is it a workable strategy just to find the top organizers and to send them to jail?

There will be always people ready to follow the easy solutions and the terrorism is nurtured upon this readiness. Remember the Communist Manifesto written by Karl Marx, which made prophecies about the incoming end of the old capitalist world. Some people took these prophecies quite literally, blowing themselves up and those surrounding them. It was easier to kill someone and to destroy something instead of educating people. Anarchism has subsided in the most developed countries, but its destructive credo is well alive in many countries. Look at the t-shirts with Che Guevara 's face. These young people will be more than happy to see this unjust world changed. How it will be changed remains the salient question.

Or let's look at more traditional signs of hatred, done by some ethnic groups. People we live among may become our sworn enemies. Armenians in 1915 were dehumanized by the long march through the desert before being massacred. The Jews in Germany during 1930s had to go a long way of stripping from any resemblance of civil rights before being sent to the extermination camps. Killing a human being isn't like killing a cockroach. That's' why for the ordinary humans who are sent to kill the enemy, it must be first presented as a bunch of cockroaches. Then the massacre looks like a ceremony of religious purification.

Can we fight against those who deny our human dignity? What should be the meaning of this war? If the goal is to restore our human appearance in the eyes of our future killers before they decide to strike, the most appropriate means should be to increase communication between the civilizations. They will fail the moment they don't see themselves surrounded by enemies while walking on the streets. The world communism fell when its leaders saw the West not as a class enemy but as a partner.

Is it possible to win this war? It may be won, but it may be lost too. Police prevention and special operations are only part of the solution. They are good on some issues, but are definitely not enough to turn back the "cockroaches" into human beings. The main point that will determine how this war will end is whether the broken bridges of communication between the different human groups can be restored. Everyone should be dedicating his or her live to this task. Our lives may ultimately depend on it.
