Chapter 3 - The Road to Riches
 ... and other myths
You've done your homework, surfed the WEB and checked out your competion, and now you're ready to take the plunge and put up your own WEB site. You've carefully calculated all the numbers, and maybe you've concluded that you'll make a million dollars in the very first year!If so, you can stop reading here, this article isn't for you ... and neither is the WEB.

Making millions on the WEB is not what it's all about, because if it were, nobody would be here. It's just not happening.Done right, a WEB presence can increase your business, add to your professional stature, and improve public perception of your company. But it's not going to make you a millionaire overnight, or for that matter, even in the forseeable future. You disagree?

Ask yourself, what are you really selling here?
How much can you sell it for?

Since this is a WEB document, I'll get straight to the point. You are not selling inventory. No matter what your business, the only thing you are selling, or can market on the WEB is image, and that is something you can't charge the public for.

By electing to do business on the WEB, you are choosing to offer your services to the world.Your WEB site must instill a sense of professionalism in order to build the trust necessary to conduct business in a global environment. The public must get to know your business first ... not you, not your family, not your dog ... but your business.

You are not only wasting the public's time and energy if you insist on telling them about your personal life first, you run the risk of giving the impression that you are not serious about your business.

On the WEB, your business must be defined in terms of an information provider. In many cases, this also means, redefining your actual product. In the case of the real estate agent, this means providing information on the community he or she represents, not just the individual houses within that community.
